As Colombia's oldest city, Santa Marta is gaining popularity with locals and tourists alike for its lively and revamped beachfront, close proximity to Tayrona National Park, and a brand new marina that opened in May of 2010. The white sandy beaches, however, are a major draw, and many people come to swim in the calm waters.
